Crown reduction is the process of removing the top canopy of the tree or reducing the overal size of the tree. This can be for the purpose of gaining more light to a property or to reduce the size of a tree that is becoming a concern. Good practice requires that no more than 30% of the canopy should be removed to conserve the health of a tree. In some situations this is not practical for example, street trees.
Crown reduction is better than completely taking the tree down and results in a more tidy compact shape to the tree. Crown thinning is preferred and less damaging to the tree than crown reduction but in some cases necessary.
